Installing a Split Rail Fence

split-rail-fence-woodInstalling a split rail fence is a great way to border your property in a charming, simple way. And although it may seem like a simple process, there’s more than meets the eye. Below we detail the process we use when installing this type of fence. You’ll see that it takes more than a keen eye and a hammer… Before we begin it’s important to note a few things. When planning a fence installation, we must make sure it fully on your property and not your neighbors. We also need to check local ordinances to make sure everything is in-line with your town/city government. Lastly, we call 888-DIG-SAFE to check for underground utilities. Once we get the green light on the above, we start to plan the dig. Here’s a list of materials/products we use.

  • Post digger
  • Carpenters level
  • Shovel
  • Measure
  • End posts
  • Line posts
  • Corner posts
  • Fence rails
  • Gravel
  • Stakes
  • String

The initial planning of a fence is very important – one small mistake and the entire project would have to be redone. We start by laying out your fence first to get a good idea of where it will go. Here’s an example of how we measure to find the perfect fit for your new fence: If we’re building a 33 ft fence and your split rails are 11 ft long, you would divid the initial length by 11 to see how many “sections” you would have. Now we can start digging! Using a shovel and post hole digger, we dig a hole that’s about 10 inches in diameter. We then fill it with a little bit of gravel to drain any moisture. This is a very important step and one that isn’t followed by a lot of contractors trying to cut corners. As you probably know, water can damage wood very easily. Therefore it is important to drain away any moisture quickly and easily. By adding gravel/rocks, we can ensure that the water goes into the ground rather than pooling around the wood post and damaging it. Next we use the level to make sure the squared up. After we’re sure the post is square, we set it. It’s during this part of the project we like to check our work and make sure everything has been done perfectly. Now we move on to the final stage in this installation, adding the rails. Once the rails are added, we check our work one more time and let you inspect the entire fence to make sure it is 100% to your liking. There are a few details we left out but for the most part (such as the steps to digging the perfect post hole) that is how we install your split rail fence. For a more in-depth look at the entire process, here’s a great tutorial by the folks over at Popular Mechanics or feel free to watch the video below. Choosing The Right Pool Fence

There are many reasons one would want to have a pool fence installed – to protect a newborn child, to protect your pets, to keep animals out, or to keep neighbors out.

Whatever your reason, protecting your pool and your property is key. Not only that, you are protecting yourself from big liabilities too.

Now that you’ve made your decision to have it installed, you have to figure out what design and style is best for your property.

Pool Barrier Fences

Anello Fence works very closely with the makers of the Pool Barrier fence company. They are a well known manufacturer of pool fencing from South Florida. We decided to work with them not only because of their commitment to high quality products and customer service (like us) but because their number one priority is creating a pool barrier that protects children from drowning.

Drowning is one of the leading causes of death in children under the age of five. Being a father myself, I knew that other parents would want the best product on the market to protect their children.

Take a look at the video below to learn more about how we install the Pool Barrier fence…

The Pool Barrier fence is made from a highly durable fabric known as TEXTILENE® mesh. This is a special vinyl coated mesh fence that is specially made to deter mold and mildew from growing on it. This is extremely important for pool fencing. Often times a fence contractor will install a fence without properly taking into account the harsh conditions that it will go under – mold/mildew from the water and chemicals from the chlorine. You want to choose a fence that is specifically designed to handle well for a long time under these conditions.

What our customers love most about this fence is that it is completely removable. Yes, it’s durable and can protect children/pets from going in but at the same time, it can be disassembled in moments.

Lastly, and most importantly, we offer a full warranty on all Pool Barrier fences that we install (under normal use) for as long as the original property owner owns it.

Split Rail Fencing: What it is & How We Install it

split-rail-fence-installationOver the years, we’ve noticed a few trends in home/property improvement, one of which is split rail fencing. This is a type of wood fencing that was very popular in the olden times. In fact, it could be one of the oldest types of fences. You see, during the Civil War, soldiers needed a portable yet durable way to protect themselves and create barriers. Often times there just wasn’t enough room to carry bulky fences with them. They eventually turned to their surroundings to help protect them by cutting down and splitting trees. This is how the name “split rail” came to be and you can see one of the most popular designs above.

Eventually, as homes became more modern and new fence material was created (such as vinyl/PVC), split rail fence installation dwindled. However, as homeowners are looking to spruce up their property on a budget, they are turning to older, more classic looks. Thus, the resurgence of the split rail fence.

As we mentioned before, split rail fencing is cheaper to install than some of the other fencing products out there but it requires detailed planning. When installing this type of fence, we have to account for various different elements – slope, angle, etc. Our motto is measure twice, install once. With this type of fence installation, you want to make sure that you go with a fence contractor that has the skills and experience necessary.

Here at Anello Fence, we pride ourselves on being one of the oldest fencing companies in NJ. Our craftsmen are masters at designing and installing fences. If you’re interested in having us install your next fence, you can schedule your complimentary estimate by clicking here.

Best Ways To Maintain Your Fence

nj fence companyHere at Anello Fence we only install the highest quality fences NJ has to offer. But as with anything, severe weather and pesky animals can damage your fence. Luckily, there are some very simple tips and tricks for keeping your fence looking brand new and we’re here to share them with you…

Visually Inspect For Animals

Animals love to find ways to make your fence their new home – especially bee’s (yikes!). Every spring and summer, make sure to visually inspect your fence and make sure you do not see any holes. Even small holes in your fence could mean a big nest. You’ll want to take the necessary steps to safely rid the animals of your fence.

Check The Stain or Paint

One of the most important things you can do to keep your fence looking brand new is to stain/paint it. Staining your fence provides more protection because a stain actually goes farther into the fence, whereas paint stays only on the top layer. By staining your fence you will not have to deal with chipped paint either.

Replace Broken Pieces

Often times a fence can break due to harsh weather (especially here in New Jersey where we get some pretty big hurricanes). If your fence breaks, don’t worry. Here at Anello Fence, we have all the necessary materials to fix your broken fence. Give us a call and we’ll be over to make it look brand new again!

Remove Mold

Mold can really do a number on your fence. That’s why we recommend investing is a power washer to easily clean off any mold and debris to keep your fence looking great.

How To Care For Your Wood Fence

Congrats – you’ve installed your new wood fence and it looks great!

But now you have to make sure it is properly maintained to keep it lasting a lifetime. Fortunately for you, Anello Fence only uses the highest quality wood fencing materials there is. However, wood is still prone to damage from extreme weather conditions and animals. Use the tips below to make sure that your new wood fence stays in pristine condition.

  • Every few months make sure to inspect your fence for damages. Falling branches from high winds can fall on your fence. Even the smallest crack can open the treated wood, leading to rot.
  • Before the winter months, check your wood fence for animal nests. Birds and squirrels love to burrow their way into man-made object, this is especially true for fencing. You’ll want to have the animal safely removed from the fence and have the fence repaired.
  • Clean your fence regularly. Mold can eat away at the top, treated layer of your fence, leaving it more susceptible to weather damage. Make sure to run a power washer over your fence when necessary.

Vinyl Fence Installation NJ Fence Contractors North Jersey

Vinyl fence is fast becoming one of the most popular fencing materials on the market. It’s stronger and more durable than wood, never needs to be painted, resists graffiti, and usually comes with a lifetime warranty. If you’re looking for the last fence you’ll ever have to buy, take a peek at vinyl fencing. It might be exactly what you’ve been searching for.

Stronger and More Flexible
Maybe the most convincing reason to choose vinyl over wood is its strength and flexibility. Some manufacturers claim that fence made from vinyl is up to five times stronger and four times more flexible than comparable wood fences. This makes it ideal for just about any application, including fencing for your yard, your pool, or keeping your livestock at bay. Whatever you need fence for, vinyl does the trick.

Maintenance Free
Another big draw of vinyl fence is the fact that it’s virtually maintenance free. Because it is one color through and through it will never need to be painted, and scratches and scrapes will never be a problem. In fact, vinyl actually resists paint, making vinyl fence “graffiti resistant” since any unwanted paint jobs are easily scrubbed off. Finally, because it’s made of high quality vinyl, the only cleaning your new fence will ever need is a yearly hosing off with soap and water.

More Bang For Your Buck
For all of the above reasons, vinyl is perhaps the best deal you’ll find when it comes to fencing materials. It may have a slightly higher initial cost, but the long term savings in terms of repair, painting and other maintenance expenses means that over the course of its lifetime your vinyl fence will run about 1/3 of what other materials, such as wood, will cost you. Add to that the fact that quality vinyl fencing almost always comes with a lifetime guarantee and its clear why many people choose vinyl for their fencing needs.

It Pays to Pay A Little More
As with most products, you get what you pay for with vinyl. That being the case, it’s best to pay a little extra for higher end materials if you hope to avoid headaches down the road. Higher end vinyl fence is more sun resistant (a major source of brittling and cracking), thicker (so it will better resist cracks, dents and breakage), and will do a better job of handling extremes of hot and cold (the other big threat to vinyl products). If you go cheap with vinyl fencing you’re almost guaranteed to experience one or more of these problems in the future. If you don’t, you’re literally guaranteed that your fence will last a lifetime.

Contact us today about which style, color, and grade of vinyl fence is going to be best for your needs. Once you find it, you can rest assured you’re buying one of the most durable and maintenance free fences on the market.
